Beyond started in 2016 as a collectively organized photography magazine in newspaper format. It is a project by photographers for photographers. Since then, the magazine has been published every two years with a different focus.

The magazine is all about supporting and discovering young artists in humanistic photography. The initiative serves as a platform for the creative exchange between photographers of different styles and as a discussion forum for relevant topics.

In the second edition 2018, the format was expanded to several panel discussions and an exhibition. The third edition (2020-) includes a magazine, an exhibition and an international artist exchange with a dialogue forum.

Beyond I - Humanistic Photography

Beyond I

Beyond I started as a magazine of ten young, German photographers with a humanistic approach. It has been released first as a guerrilla action at LUMIX Festival for Young Photojournalism in 2016.
The magazine has been initiated by Juliane Herrmann, who felt the need to give a voice to young photographers with different approaches in humanistic photography.
Together the group of ten featured artists went to LUMIX Festival for Young Photojournalism, spread a lot of copies among the visitors of the festival and sent copies to various people from the photography scene.
The response was incredible:  Beyond I was represented in several exhibitions, received extensive media coverage, and helped the photographers to get much- deserved attention. Since then the magazine has appeared every two years in newspaper format.

Beyond II - Female Photographers

Beyond II

Beyond II is a magazine in newspaper format featuring ten young female photographers.
The idea to produce a second edition of Beyond aroused, when initiator Juliane Herrmann realized that female photographers were highly under-represented in the sector, especially in photojournalism. That’s why in 2018 she dedicated the second issue of Beyond to ten great female photographers who were born or were living in Germany. At that time, the theme seemed to be in the air. Soon the magazine creators got invited to panel discussions and the dialogue started to become much more lively. From the initial idea of the magazine originated not only four panel discussions about women in humanistic photography but also an exhibition at Kunsthaus Rhenania, which took place in May 2019 during Photoszene Festival in Cologne. Miriam Zlobinski (curator and visual historian from Berlin) who was also the author of the text in Beyond II and Juliane Herrmann curated the first exhibition of Beyond.

Beyond III - [post]colonial Present

Beyond III – [post]colonial Present

Beyond III aims to open a discourse on colonial structures in photography, the power of images in our time and the conditions of image production in a globalised world. For the third issue, the initiative has invited ten young photographers from Africa and Western Europe to present their work and exchange their ideas in a magazine, an exhibition and an international artist exchange with dialogue forum.
The print magazine Beyond III has been published in May 2020. It serves as theoretical basis on the topic and offers a starting point for further discussions. In addition to the artistic work of the participants, the magazine published two texts by Fiston Mwanza Mujila (Congolese writer) and Mark Sealy (British curator and cultural historian).
The third edition of the magazine uses the language of art to open a space in which photographers from different regions of the world meet, exchange ideas, learn from one another and create new images beyond clichéd and stereotypical perspectives.
More information on the current program of Beyond III, you can get here.
The project was conceived and realized by Juliane Herrmann (initiator of Beyond and freelance photographer, Cologne) and Marie Köhler (photographer and media artist, Cologne) in cooperation with the Internationale Photoszene Köln, Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum – Cultures of the World and AfricologneFESTIVAL. The magazine was funded by Stiftung Kultur of VG Bild-Kunst.
